'Like Birds in a Cage': the Domestic Migrant Workers of Cairo

This is the story of a group of migrant workers from the Philippines and Indonesia who feel trapped in the suburban Cairene home in which they work. They love the children, whom they feel as though they have raised themselves. Yet, at the same time, they are missing out on their own children's lives in the effort to send money back to provide for their families. Linda, one of the women, says her employers are “OK” – they treat her better than other domestic workers. Still, her job is physically and emotionally taxing, and she often feels she is “stuck.”
